JOANNE GUTHRIE
Environmental Sculptor & Mixed Media Artist
Transforming reclaimed materials into sculptures and installations that explore our relationship with industry, waste, memory, and the natural world.
Why I Create
“I believe discarded materials still have stories to tell. Through sculpture and mixed media, I explore how transformation, repair, and reclamation can reveal new possibilities for both objects and ourselves."
For more than two decades, I worked in Alberta's industrial sector, building a career surrounded by steel, fabrication, and heavy industry.
Over time, I became increasingly aware of the tension between industrial progress and environmental responsibility.
Today, I use many of those same skills to transform reclaimed materials into artwork that asks questions about consumption, waste, human impact, and our connection to the land.
My sculptures and mixed media works are built from salvaged steel, handmade paper, natural pigments, reclaimed textiles, and found objects; materials carrying histories of their own.
Each piece becomes an act of reclamation.

IN THE STUDIO
I am currently developing three bodies of work: Occupying Space, Reclaimed Threads, and A Social Affair. Each project is in active development in the studio and will be released as it evolves through process and material exploration.
Follow along on Instagram for new work, exhibitions, and studio updates.
Commissioned Work
I create one-of-a-kind sculptures and mixed-media pieces for private collectors, public spaces, and residential settings.
Commissions are developed through a collaborative process, from concept to installation.
