Joanne Guthrie
Sculptor | Welder | Mixed Media Artist
I don’t just make art; I salvage it from the world around me. My studio is part scrapyard, part forest floor, where rusted steel, broken plastics, and handmade charcoal form the foundation of sculptures and drawings that explore how we live with the Earth, not just on it.
My work exists at the intersection of creation and decay. Imagine the cool touch of steel, the earthy scent of decomposing leaves, or the gentle stain of berries pressed on paper. Each material carries the memory of labor, land, and time, and each piece transforms what has lived and weathered into objects that speak of presence, absence, and renewal.
Through welding, drawing, and papermaking, I uncover the stories objects carry after they’ve been used, forgotten, or left behind. My practice invites viewers to notice beauty in what is often overlooked and to reflect on the relationships between material, land, and human touch.
At its heart, my work is an act of care for materials, for the Earth, and for the communities that inhabit it. By transforming discarded objects into thoughtful, conversation-driven works, I hope to spark curiosity, wonder, and connection.
