JOANNE GUTHRIE
Reclaiming what is discarded. Transforming what is overlooked.
WHY I CREATE
My work begins with what has been left behind.
Discarded materials, industrial remnants, and natural fragments are collected, reworked, and reimagined into sculptural forms and installations. These materials carry history—of use, of waste, of place—and I use that history as the foundation for new narratives.
The work sits between collapse and renewal. Between what we consume and what we discard.
I am drawn to the spaces where industry and nature overlap.
Living and working in Alberta, I have seen both the scale of extraction and the quiet persistence of natural systems. My work responds to that tension—not as illustration, but as transformation.
Reclamation is not just material practice. It is a way of thinking about responsibility, memory, and what we choose to value.
SELECTED WORKS
These projects represent finished series and exhibited work:
Each body of work reflects a different perspective on material, space, and perception, ranging from environmental observation to more intimate, reflective studies of form and memory.
These series are complete and form the foundation of my evolving practice.
IN THE STUDIO
I am currently developing three new bodies of work:
Occupying Space, Reclaimed Threads, and A Social Affair.
Each project is in active development in the studio and will be released as it evolves through process and material exploration.
Follow along on Instagram for new work, exhibitions, and studio updates.
Commissions & Site-Specific Work
I accept commissioned work for private collectors, public spaces, and installations.
Each piece is developed in response to context, material, space, and narrative. I work closely with clients to create sculptural works that are grounded in place and intention.
